The foundations of any construction are very important.

While at times it may seem an unnecessary expense, proper foundations are the key to the life of the landscape.

For paved areas a concrete base properly constructed with steel of the correct size and free of rust will ensure long term life of the paving.

Brick pavers or other paving material should be mortared onto the concrete base to ensure minimal movement occurs.

The addition of expansion joints between paved areas and rigid walls and also in larger expanses of pavement will allow for natural ground movement and help control cracking.

Retaining walls need to be constructed on a firm and solid footing.

There are a lot of products on the market today, interlocking retaining wall systems, which are designed to be constructed on a crushed rock footing up to certain recommended heights.

All other types of block or brick wall need to be constructed on a concrete footing with correct steel placing and depth of concrete.

All walls over 1 m in height need to be designed by a qualified engineer and will take into account soil type, gradient of land and the type of material used in construction.
